October 15, 2026
At 5:18 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2026, the National Park Service's Blue Ridge Parkway road status table showed the Parkway closed from Bull Gap, just north of the Ox Creek Road access, all the way up past Craggy Gardens to Mount Mitchell State Park. The closure listed for those 20 miles is "Weather Closure." For two years, a closed gate north of Asheville meant hurricane damage. Now it usually means something older and more familiar. The Craggy stretch has been repaired, and on any given day this fall and winter, weather decides whether it's open.
Here is how the Parkway around Asheville looked in that Sunday snapshot, listed north to south:
| Mileposts | Section | Status on Oct. 11, 2026 | Listed reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| 344.2 – 355.3 | NC 80 to Mount Mitchell State Park | Closed | Helene repairs; recreation of any kind prohibited |
| 355.3 – 375.7 | NC 128 through Craggy Gardens to Bull Gap | Closed | Weather Closure |
| 375.7 – 381.9 | Bull Gap to Folk Art Center | Open | |
| 381.9 – 382.8 | Folk Art Center to US 70, Tunnel Road | Ungated | |
| 384.7 – 423.2 | I-40 to Beech Gap, through Mount Pisgah and Graveyard Fields | Open | |
| 423.2 – 443.0 | Beech Gap to Balsam Gap | Closed | Weather Closure |
Only one segment in that table is still closed for Helene repairs. The other closures carry the same label the Parkway has always used for ice, snow and downed trees.
The road from Asheville to Craggy Gardens reopened on September 15, 2025. That day the Park Service opened 26 miles from milepost 382 in Asheville to Ridge Junction at milepost 355.3, after finishing repairs at mileposts 375 and 380. The reopening brought back the Craggy Gardens Visitor Center and the Craggy Pinnacle Trail. The southern side had come back a few weeks earlier. On August 22, 2025, a continuous 38-mile corridor from milepost 382 to milepost 420 reopened, including the Mount Pisgah Inn, campground, picnic area and trails.
One piece at Craggy is still missing. Asheville Watchdog reported in May 2026 that the Craggy Gardens Picnic Area would stay closed through 2026. A Parkway spokesperson told the outlet the trail system was open, but the picnic area had no facilities.
So when the Bull Gap gate is closed this fall, the cause is no longer an unfinished slide repair between your house and Craggy Pinnacle. The repairs are done, and that stretch climbs to some of the highest ground near town, where weather has always closed it.
The Park Service's October 5, 2026 release said 458 of the Parkway's 469 miles have reopened. Of the 60 slide repairs Helene made necessary, 48 are finished and work is underway on the last 12. Those counts cover the whole Parkway, not only the gap near Asheville. You can now drive without a break from James River in Virginia, at milepost 63.7, down to Little Switzerland near milepost 344. The final Helene repairs, from milepost 344 to 355, are "slated for completion and reopening by the end of 2026."
That final segment runs from NC 80 to the Mount Mitchell entrance at NC 128. Once it reopens, the Parkway north of Asheville connects to Little Switzerland again for the first time since September 2024. The Park Service's construction page lists the work as slope reconstruction and stabilization, drainage repairs, rebuilding and paving the road, and curbing, with a December 2026 target. That page was last updated June 17, 2026.
December falls in the season when the high Parkway closes most often. The Park Service's winter guidance says sections are often closed to vehicles for snow and ice, and that conditions change from day to day. NC State Parks says Mount Mitchell State Park "may have frequent and prolonged closures during the winter" because of its elevation. It also notes that the Parkway is the park's primary access and the Park Service closes the road when it's icy. The Park Service has flagged the same timing problem from the construction side. Its March 31, 2026 release said:
"Parkway construction activity is complex and highly technical, often complicated by remote locations, difficult terrain, and shorter construction seasons due to dynamic weather at higher elevations."
None of the sources says the end-of-year target is slipping. But even if the repairs finish on time, the reopening lands in the season when the road between Craggy and Mount Mitchell is most often gated for weather. On the first days after the repair crews leave, the weather gate north of Bull Gap may still be closed.
On the status table, "Closed" can mean very different things depending on the last column. A Helene closure such as milepost 344.2 to 355.3 comes with a hard rule: "Recreation of any kind is PROHIBITED in this section," which means no walking or biking past the gate. A weather closure lasts only until crews can check the road. When the Park Service closed the entire Parkway ahead of a winter storm in January 2026, it said closures would stay until staff could safely assess conditions and clear storm debris.
Those closures can be short. In October 2023, WLOS reported that snow closed the Parkway from NC 80 to Ox Creek Road around 4:30 p.m. on October 16. It reopened shortly after noon the next day once officials had checked it. That is one example, not a rule. The October 11, 2026 table doesn't say what caused this week's closures. The same snapshot did list Virginia sections closed for "down trees and rocks."
The access points matter too. The October 11 table listed the Ox Creek/Elk Mountain access road at milepost 375.7 and the Craven Gap access from Town Mountain Road at milepost 377.4 as open. The Forest Service gate on Stoney Fork Access Road at milepost 367.6 was closed until further notice. Sections marked "ungated," like the short run between the Folk Art Center and Tunnel Road, are open except in emergencies. The page itself warns that status can change during the day after it's updated, so the timestamp at the top matters.
If you drove up toward Craggy this spring, the corridor is also calmer now. In March 2026 the Park Service warned of heavy dump-truck traffic between US 70 at milepost 382.5 and NC 128, with a 35 mph limit and intermittent one-lane traffic, so crews could reach the landslide sites. That release also counted 45 sites still being worked between Linville Falls and Mount Mitchell. By October, 12 repairs were left on the entire Parkway.
The road south toward Mount Pisgah was fully open on October 11, from I-40 through US 276 and Graveyard Fields to Beech Gap at milepost 423.2. On that side, the facilities set the deadline. Counting from today, October 12:
For a sit-down meal on top of Mount Mitchell, the summit restaurant serves 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. The concession stand keeps the same hours seven days a week, and the gift shop is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday. All of it depends on the gates. On October 11, the Parkway approaches to the park were closed from both directions: weather from the Asheville side and Helene repairs from the north. State Parks lists the park address as 2388 N.C. 128 and calls the Parkway its primary access.
The Parkway segment closest to town is the one most likely to be open on a gray November afternoon. Bull Gap to the Folk Art Center was open on October 11, and so was Tunnel Road to the Park Headquarters and Visitor Center. The Folk Art Center itself, at milepost 382, is listed by the Park Service as open year-round. Craven Gap, where Town Mountain Road crosses the Parkway, sits inside that open segment.
Once the last Helene segment reopens, the Parkway's limits north of Asheville will come down to weather and season again, as they did before September 2024. The Park Service posts daily updates on its road status page, and the timestamp at the top shows how current the table is.
